Staying warm for less
My Staywarm monthly direct debit has been increased from £52 to £62 from February 2005. Do any other companies, for example, Scottish Power, operate similiar schemes so that I can get an alterative quote?
RK, Rugeley
This is Money says: Powergen boasts that Staywarm is 'exclusively designed for the over-60s, offering you complete peace of mind. Once you've joined, how ever much gas and electricity you need, you pay a fixed price'.
Of course, we now know that this 'fixed' price isn't so permanent. Around 350,000 have just seen a rise in the cost. Read the full story here.
Unfortunately, no other gas and electricity provider offers an equivalent scheme to Staywarm but it is still likely that you will be able to find a cheaper tariff.
The best way to do this is on the internet. This is Money offers a cut your bills service via uSwitch.
There are plenty of other options which are a very similar. Energywatch, the official consumer watchdog for gas and electricity suppliers, has a calculator on its website at www.energywatch.org.uk. Enter your postcode and it will bring up any cheaper alternatives for the area.
If you feel more comfortable talking through your situation, Energywatch also has a consumer helpline on 08459 060 708.
You can also find more advice and tips through this fuel bills search.
