Is £60 limit fair?
My bank branch has put up a notice informing us that withdrawals from the cashiers of less than £60 will not be allowed - sums of this size will only be available from the ATM.
My mother is horrified to think she will not be able to draw small amounts of cash from her savings account.
Can a bank refuse to let you draw your money however you like? Does no-one today consider the elderly who find PIN numbers and cards confusing. RL, Birmingham
Brian Capon at the British Bankers' Association replies: Different types of accounts have different features and some banks offer accounts that are designed so that withdrawals are made through an ATM rather than at the branch counter.
If your mother's account is the type where a passbook has been issued, then the lower limit for withdrawals at the counter is unlikely to apply. I would suggest that she asks a member of staff at her branch to explain the withdrawal arrangements for the particular type of account she has.
If the limit does apply to her account, the staff should be able to help your mother choose a different type of account that will allow withdrawals to be made at the counter. She could have this either as well as, or instead of, her existing account.
