Can I get insurance?
I am a self employed computer contractor looking for income protection in case I am disabled and can't work for an extended period, I also take part in high risk sports but am willing to pay a premium to get complete cover, what kind of insurance do I need? B.A. London.
Malcolm Tarling of the Association of British Insurers says: What you need is income replacement insurance (previously known as permanent health insurance) some companies will give cover for people in high risk occupations or who take part in high risk sports, in which case you may have to pay more.
Policies generally pay out up to 75% to 80% of your income for the period in which you can't work, even up to retirement age if necessary.
There is usually a deferment period of at least eight weeks before you can make a claim, and longer periods are vailable which will make your premium lower. As you are self employed the insurer will need evidence of your income for the past two or three years.
There are numerous insurers so it may pay you to go through a broker. You can get a list from the British Insurance Brokers Association on 0171 623 9043.
