Pension backtracking

I have just joined the company pension scheme. Can I make back-payments into a personal pension for the last six years as I did not have a pension in the past? RM, Herts.

,Jon Minchin, independent financial adviser at Pensionline, says: You can. You have unused tax relief for the previous years and if you deem that the contributions cover those years you can pay into a personal pension using the carryback facility.

Don't forget that you cannot put in a sum greater than your salary in the specific year. Note that the carry-forward facility currently available with personal pensions disappears from next April but the carryback facility for one year (with a maximum of two) will still remain.
