How do I fund studies?
I AM Nigerian and have been givena place at the University of Portsmouth. I need a loan to finance my education from September 2002. Can you help?.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Education and Skills says: Your position depends on many factors including your residence status and/or emigration status.
If you are a British citizen, too apply for a student loan you must have been living in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for three years prior to the start of the academic year in which your course begins. You apply to your local authority.
If you are not a British citizen you must have 'settled' status, indefinite leave to remain or exceptional leave to remain. If you do not fulfil these requirements you could try to seek alternative funding, for example from the British Council either in the UK or Nigeria.
For more on eligibility for student support see the Department for Education and Skills website, which gives the terms and conditions applying to student loans. Also on this site see the online leaflet Financial Support for Higher Education Students 200 1/2.
