WHILE the wilder side of college life may be quite an education in itself, most students still have their sights set on a degree to carry them from university into the working world.

More than half of all students hope to graduate with an upper second-class degree, or 2:1. About 16% expect to get a first, while only 10% believe they will end up with a 2:2.

But the results tell a different story. In 1999-2000, only 44% graduated with a 2:1, eight% of full-time students obtained a first and seven% scraped by with a third-class degree.

There were 35% in the 2:2 band, while 6% came away with unclassified degrees - qualifying them only for the next round of retakes.
