Child's play
CAN YOU claim child tax credit for children in full-time education to the age of 19 or only for children up to 16? The Inland Revenue helpline dealing with child tax credit say that child tax credit for 2001/02 and 2002/03 is only payable for children under 16 and not for those up to 19 if in full-time education - as the answer to a recent question on your site says. Which is right? ED, London and also for KJ, Grimsby.
A spokesman for the Inland Revenue says: There is confusion here about Child Tax Credit and Children's Tax Credit. Children's' Tax Credit, which is currently in operation, is only available in respect of children up the age of 16 and no further. But Child Tax Credit, which is to be introduced in April 2003 is more generous: it will provide support for children up to 1 September after their 16th birthday as a matter of course, and beyond that date support will be available for young people up to the age of 19 who continue in full-time non-advanced education.
Linda Whitney adds: the answer to which you refer is in fact correct - it is about Child Tax Credit.
