Credit crunch
I am a single parent with three boys and my youngest is registered disabled. Christmas is coming and I am in debt already, having to pay off credit cards, and then I will have to start paying off my student loan. I am getting help dealing with my creditors but I am worried they may be able to take away the £150 a month my disabled son gets in Disabled Living Allowance. Can they? FS, Bedford Falls.
Linda Whitney says: The Department of Work and Pensions tells me that as long as your son fulfils the qualifying conditions you will continue to receive Disabled Living Allowance (DLA) for him, regardless of your financial situation. The Bankruptcy Advisory Service confirms that even if you went bankrupt, the DLA, as it is paid in respect of your son, could not be taken away.
As far as your debts are concerned, you are doing the right thing in getting help with dealing with creditors. Make sure you are getting all the state benefits you are entitled to. If you need more help ask your local CAB or Money Advice Centre (in 'phone books) - they have debt counselling experts who can help you face to face. Or call National Debtline on 08088 084 000, 9am-9pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am-1pm Saturday who provide self-help packs and factsheets for anyone worried about handling debt. You can also download them from Nationaldebtline.
