Fortnum and Mason defies recession with record sales
Luxury hampers and speciality teas have helped Fortnum & Mason, purveyor of upmarket nosh to the Queen, post record sales according to the latest accounts filed at Companies House.
The store, which opened in London's Piccadilly in 1707, said it was not affected by 'recessionary conditions'.
Sales for the year to July increased from £46m to £47m.

It also narrowed its full-year loss from £8.2m to £5.6m after shutting a US distribution centre in Delaware.
Managing director Beverley Aspinall said: 'The focus will be on maximising sales and margins and keeping costs under tight controls.'
