How we host at Highclere: Manhattan
Lady Carnarvon, the chatelaine of Highclere Castle – where Downton Abbey was filmed – shares her favourite recipes
Lord Carnarvon very much enjoys a small glass of whisky before supper. He always says it is very good for him – purely medicinal

Interestingly, during Prohibition in the US (1920-33) all alcohol sales were banned, but the government made an exemption for whisky if it was prescribed by a doctor and sold through licensed pharmacies.
Unsurprisingly, America’s pharmacy chains grew tremendously in number. This Manhattan is a classic whisky cocktail from the States.
Makes 1
- 50ml (2fl oz) Scotch whisky. The cocktail was traditionally made with rye whiskey but at Highclere we tend to use Scotch
- 20ml (¾fl oz) red sweet vermouth
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- Ice cubes
- A cocktail cherry (maraschino cherry, from supermarkets), to garnish
Pour all the ingredients except the cherry into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker and stir. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the cocktail cherry.
