If there’s one thing I hate, it’s fancy dress costumes for children that they’ll one wear once. Whether it’s World Book Day, Halloween or Christmas, suddenly a sea of polyester tat hits the shops (or gets ordered on Amazon), much of it destined for a single outing before the kids decide they are bored of it or they grow out of it by the following year.
It’s for this reason I often turn to Vinted or secondhand shops to source kids’ costumes – I feel much better buying a shiny witch’s costume full of plastic fibres if it’s preloved rather than freshly pulled from a warehouse shelf.
If trawling through Vinted listings doesn’t appeal, however, then another method that’s often worked for me is buying Halloween-appropriate clothes that aren’t actually fancy dress – think black dresses, ghoulish jumpers or cobweb-covered leggings. These are better because you can add a simple (rewearable!) accessory like a pair of cat ears or fake wings for Halloween itself, but also get plenty of wear out of the items for the rest of autumn and winter.
Lots of stores offer this kind of Halloween-adjacent clothing, from H&M to Marks & Spencer, plus many of the supermarkets. Here are some of the best bits that have caught my eye this spooky season…
