To wax or not to wax?

I have always plucked my eyebrows myself but I never seem able to produce a really neat, even-looking result. A friend of mine has suggested that I get my eyebrows waxed.

Could you tell me whether you think this is a good idea? It sounds very painful and I'm worried that it might not be good for my skin.

Is it something I can do at home myself?
