Mother-of-two reveals how her son's light-up school shoes EXPLODED after she put them in the tumble dryer (and she admits it's not the first time a 'mum hack' has backfired)

  • Becki Jones, 35, from Cardiff needed a quick-fix solution for her son's wet shoes
  • The mother-of-two thought she could put the light-up shoes in the tumble dryer
  • She later opened the dryer to find the 'ruined' shoes 'with wires sticking out'

A mother-of-two has revealed how her son's light-up school shoes exploded when she put them in a tumble dryer in a bid to dry them off in time for school.

Becki Jones, 35, from Cardiff, thought she was saving time by throwing the shoes into the dryer after her seven-year-old son Morgan soaked them while playing in the garden with the hosepipe.

It was only when she opened the dryer the following morning to find the 'ruined' black shoes with the 'wires sticking out' that Becki realised her mistake.

'I should have just put them on the washing line but I didn't think,' she said.

Becki explained she was like many other 'sleep-deprived' and 'frantic' parent - and admitted it was not the first time a 'mum hack' had backfired.

'I'm a very hands-on mum, but I'm very honest about the trials and tribulations mums go through,' she said.

Becki explained she thought the shoes would wash and dry the same way as trainers.

'I thought nothing of putting them in the washing machine and they were fine after that,' she said. That night I just shoved them in the tumble dryer with his school uniform.

'The next morning I opened the dryer door to get the shoes out and they'd exploded. All the wires were sticking out.'

She continued: 'This all happened about 10 minutes before we were meant to get to school. It's just the sort of thing that happens to me.

'I'm very sleep deprived all the time, it's a prime example of a failed mum hack.'

Becki, who blogs about the challenges of being a mother at The Tot and the Tearaway, added her similarly busy friends had shared similar stories.

'I have a close friend who admitted to me the other day that she's even microwaved clothes when she's in a rush,' she said.
