'As a teacher, I honestly think that the only "homework" Primary school kids should have is reading every night. Anything else is, quite frankly, ridiculous,' one teacher wrote.

'Homework at my kids new school is optional and a note comes home for the parent to tick for yes or no as to whether they would like homework sent home each night,' another said.

'I do think a small amount of homework is important for families to be involved in their kids education. It shouldn't be hours and stressful, with early primary it doesn't even need to be everyday. But schools are not solely responsible for children being educated [sic],' one disagreed.

In 2015, a study by the University of Oviedo, Spain, found that homework should take just 60 minutes for pupils to benefit, and any longer than 90 minutes can lead to a drop in results.

The study also found that students shouldn't be given help with homework as their results were lower than those who asked for help at home.

Another study by Stanford Graduate School of Education, found that doing more than three hours of homework per night may make pupils ill.
