The new sunscreen stars
Oh, how times have changed in the world of SPF. Shiseido created the first suncream for the Japanese market, Uviolin, in 1923, but today’s high-tech power products come with both sun protection and skin benefits. The basic rules? Wear a daily SPF of 15 to 30 to defend against burning; label-check for the PA (protection grade of UVA) or circled UVA symbol to cover you against ageing, and choose multitaskers that give you more for your money. Here’s our pick:
- StriVectin-SH Age Protect SPF 30 (£45, selfridges.com). Filters rays and contains nicotinic acid to help rebuild the skin’s DNA and put fine lines firmly in the shade.
- Heliocare SPF 50 Compact (£25,heliocare.co.uk). Gives a hint of coverage and performs as a sweat-absorbing sun shield.
- For sporty types, Garnier Ambre Solaire Clear Protect + High SPF 30 (£14.99, boots.com) is what GB middle-distance runner Hannah England slings into her kit bag; or try its Golden Protect High SPF 30 (£14.99, boots.com) for protection with a light-bouncing shimmer.
- Don’t forget your hair: Shiseido’s new Sun Protection Spray Oil-Free SPF 15 (£22, houseoffraser.co.uk) multitasks for hair and skin.
- And delicate lips also need a little TLC. Mac Suntint Liquid Lip Balm SPF 20 (£11.50, maccosmetics.co.uk) comes in nude, coral and hot pink shades to add a lick of colour to your suncare regime.
