Makeup masterclass: Renew you
Lift your look and drop a decade with my five
age-defying tricks
1 SWITCH TO A LIGHTER BASE
Heavy foundation draws attention to fine lines, so opt for one with a lighter texture. For oily to combination skin, try oil-free or satin foundation. For normal to dry skin, choose a tinted moisturiser. Alternatively, a mineral formula such as Lancôme Ageless Minérale (£32, from Selfridges, tel: 0800 123400) will really illuminate your skin.
2 GROOM YOUR BROWS
Well-groomed brows will give your face an instant lift. It’s worth getting them threaded or waxed by a professional, especially for the first time. Fill any gaps with a waxy brow pencil, then go over with brow powder to soften. Try Laura Mercier Eye Brow Pencil (£15) and Brow Powder (£20, from Selfridges, tel: 0800 123400).
3 CHANGE YOUR COLOUR PALETTE
Dark colours such as red and black can be ageing, so switch to softer neutral shades. For eyes, try brown and taupe, or grey and plum for evening, such as YSL Ombres 5 Lumières in Lilac Sky (£37, tel: 01444 255700). Use peachy tones on your cheeks and shades of rose, pink-nude and sheer berry on lips.

4 BRIGHTEN YOUR EYES
A dab of eye gel – Elemis Eyes Awake Recovery Gel (£36, from timetospa.co.uk) – works wonders. Then conceal dark circles with a pink-toned concealer, such as Givenchy Mister Light Instant Light Correcting Pen (£19.57, tel: 01932 233824), followed by a yellow-toned concealer.
5 EVEN OUT SKIN TONE
Redness, thread veins and age spots are very ageing, so invest in a good
yellow-based concealer. Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer (£16, bobbibrown.co.uk) is a long-standing favourite. Avoid make-up with red undertones, as it will accentuate a
florid complexion.
MY SECRET
Apply moisturiser before your make-up to plump and freshen your skin. I love Clarins Multi-Active Day Early Wrinkle Correction Cream (£36, tel: 0800 036 3558).
