My friends and family keep spelling my newborn's common name wrong - their laziness is winding me up but people think I'M the rude one

A mother has has vented her frustration online after multiple people have spelt her newborn's name wrong.

The anonymous woman posted on UK-based forum Mumsnet to ask others if she was being unreasonable.

She said that more than half of her congratulatory cards have the wrong spelling of her daughter's name in it.

She wrote: 'We’ve named our new baby a name which has several legitimate and well used spellings.

'The spelling we’ve gone with is actually the original spelling, but is the second most popular spelling in use in the UK currently.

'Think Isabelle versus Isabel for example. It’s not a made up or unknown spelling, and is completely phonetic. The name itself isn’t particularly unusual.

'Almost everyone is already spelling the baby’s name wrong - over half of our new baby cards are spelt wrong.

'I’ve literally texted people “meet baby ‘Isabelle’” and right below they’ve written something like “congratulations, ‘Isabel’ is beautiful” etc.'

The woman then went on to say that she knew that the spelling was going to be an issue but she ' expected people might be able to read what I’d written and spell it right the moment they were told the name.'

She continued to ask if she was being unreasonable to think that it is rude to not make an effort to spell her baby's name correctly in a card.

People took to the thread to comment what they thought about the situation - some users thought the woman was being rude and that she should appreciate the gesture.

One user said: 'Sorry, I think you are being just a little unreasonable. Maybe think yourself lucky that people are taking the time and trouble to send you a card, a spelling error with a name really isn't THAT important.

'I get it all the time, even though I spell my name out on the phone, if it's followed up with a letter or email, it's almost always spelt incorrectly.

'I'm afraid people are just a bit lazy about these things. Congratulations on the new baby!'

Another wrote: 'Not rude, just a very easy mistake to make when there are various correct versions and you have lots of other stuff going on.

'I actually think it's rather rude to get annoyed about it, rather than just being grateful they've bothered.'

A third penned: 'It’s not stupid or lazy! People have other things going on apart from double checking the spelling of a name.

'Personally I find Isabelle/Isobel/Isabel a b***dy nightmare (I appreciate this isn’t your baby’s name).'

A fourth commented: 'You know what's important? That people are excited and love your new baby and what to welcome her.

'You know what's not important? That they spell her name right.'

But other users took to the thread to defend the woman and agree with her, with one saying that people shouldn't bother buying cards if they don't check the spelling of a name.

One user said: 'God, I would NEVER do that. I always check and double check the spelling of a name if I'm not sure.

'People who don't capitalize names really annoy me. It's so lazy.'

Another wrote: 'People spell mine wrong all the time, think i/y ending. When it's there in my email address, how I've signed off the email and then again in my formal email signature.

'I always make a point of checking how a name is spelt as it drives me bonkers. It takes a second. You are not being unreasonable.'

A third penned: 'Yeah this irritates me too. It's really not that much effort to buy a card when you're doing a food shop anyway, just chuck it in the trolley and then 2 mins to write it.

'But why bother at all if you can't be a***d to check the name spelling? A friend of mine does this constantly.

'Honestly I'd rather not receive cards at all if my friends don't care about me enough to spell my name right.

A fourth commented: 'I'm almost 40 and people spell my name wrong continuously. Even when replying to an email from me where it's both in the email address and the sign off.

It's never going to change and it won't for your child either. However, you will appreciate the people who get it right!'
