Fashion: Ageless Style
Wardrobe staples for everyone, by fashion director Shelly Vella
For a look that can be embraced at any stage in life, ‘smart casual’ is hard to beat. Many of us fell for high-low dressing, as it’s also known, during the pandemic, and there’s a lot to be said for continuing the love affair. After all, it’s comfort dressing at its best. Think trousers that give a little, an easy, breezy white shirt that benefits from a crease or two and, when the occasion arises, the addition of a tailored jacket, jewellery and a heel that will take the look to town.
Jacket, £240, secondsummerlabel.com. Shirt, £24.90, uniqlo.com. Joggers, £160, sheepinc.com. Earrings, £160, and bracelet,. £65, akojomarket.com. Bag, £425, aspinaloflondon.com
- Elasticated waistbands tend to get a bad rap but comfort is king and a good finishing detail makes all the difference.
- A well-cut blazer is an investment buy and a great wardrobe multitasker as it can be dressed up or down.
- Look to the men’s section for a more extensive selection of shirts, especially if you’re looking for a good-value oversized buy.
- Accessories make an outfit. A pair of heels, statement jewellery and a bag that adds a pop of colour will give that added oomph to low-key separates.

Do
Invest in quality pieces to elevate the look. After an initial outlay, this will result in a healthier cost per wear. Also keep things simple (no big prints or clashing brights).
Don't
…forget that some knitted and jersey materials may stretch and ‘knee’, so it’s best to upgrade fabrics and gently hitch up the trousers a little before sitting down.
