Win a chance to beat your fear of flying!

Femail.co.uk has teamed up with Virtual Aviation to send one winning reader on a shared session course to help them overcome their fears of flying.

Virtual Aviation offers unique Fear of Flying courses at Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

They're unique because your own experienced and sympathetic pilot will help you to address your fears in the safety of a full-motion flight simulator, without having to leave the ground.

Fear of flying, or aerophobia, is very common. Studies suggest that up to one in six people

suffer. They can fall into one of two categories; those who fly (reluctantly), and those who don't fly.

People who fly reluctantly, such as frequent business travellers, often experience real misery. First there is the anticipatory anxiety before the flight, then there is the sheer terror of the flight itself. The situation probably doesn't improve, no matter how many flights they take.

On the other hand, people who refuse to fly manage to avoid their fear but instead restrict their lives by not being able to take foreign holidays, visit friends or relatives overseas, or take a job that might involve air travel.

How is the Virtual Aviation course different?

The Virtual Aviation course is unique because it gives nervous flyers the opportunity to experience and familiarise themselves with all the various sensations of flight in the unthreatening environment of a highly realistic airline simulator, with the reassuring personal attention of two experienced and understanding pilots.

For nervous flyers, the simulator is better than a real aircraft because it allows you to experience whatever worries you have in complete safety, and in the knowledge that you can get out at any time if you wish. For example, if you wanted to know what would happen if there was an engine failure on take-off, the pilots would be happy to demonstrate.

THE COURSE IN DETAIL

The courses last approximately four hours and take place at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, mostly at weekends. The course director talks with all customers on the telephone before their visit. This is to elicit background history about your fears, and this information is passed on to the pilots.

On arrival at the flight simulator centre, you will be met by your captain. Then follows an informal pre-flight briefing lasting up to an hour, during which your ideas of what is normal or abnormal in flight are discussed, as are the particular fears you would like to address in the simulator.

The next part of the course takes place in the flight simulator and lasts between 90 minutes and two hours, usually with a short break in the middle.

During the time in the simulator the co-pilot will be flying the aircraft so that the captain can give you his full attention. The content of the simulator time will differ depending on your individual needs.

After leaving the simulator the final hour is spent in an informal de-briefing, discussing what has been achieved and how perceptions have been altered. This is a vital part of the course as it gives customers an opportunity to consolidate what they have learned. Strategies are explored to help them prepare to fly with a new confidence.
