Coenzyme Q10 - energy spark plug
Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) is a powerful antioxidant primarily found in fish and
meat, that helps protect the body from the damaging effects of free radicals,
and also helps to preserve vitamin E - another important antioxidant.
Co-Q10 is heavily involved in energy production within virtually every cell
in the body, as it aids mitochondria, the microscopic 'power-houses' within
cells that produce ATP, the body's energy source.
Co-Q10 is most abundant where there are the most mitochondria, which is in
the liver and heart tissues. As a result, it appears to be an especially
relevant supplement for people who suffer congestive heart failure, high
blood pressure, arrhythmias, some forms of cardiomyopathy, and angina.
Several studies have shown it may be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of
many of these disorders, and although it can take months before the
beneficial effects show, anyone taking it for congestive heart failure
should not stop taking it suddenly as sudden withdrawal may worsen the
symptoms.
There is also the potential that Co-Q10 may also help slow down the
progression of Alzheimer's disease as well as helping heal inflamed gum
tissues. Supplements are usually 30-90 mg per day, and there is some
research to support the claim that oil-based capsules of Co-Q10 may be
better absorbed than tablet forms.
Most doctors also recommend taking it
with meals. Always check with your doctor that it will not interfere with
other medication you may be given.
