What the £800million NHS deficit is doing to the health service:
DELAYED OPERATIONS
In North Staffordshire more than 500 operations have been postponed for up to four months. Delays have been ordered at Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone Hospital and Pembury Hospital which affect all operations until April 1.
BILLS NOT PAID
Eight out ten NHS hospitals are failing to pay their bills on time. Some 207 out of 235 NHS Trusts failed to meet their target of paying 95 per cent within 30 days. Across all trusts, £1.9billion worth of payments were held back in 2005.
RECRUITMENT CUT
The University Hospital of North Staffordshire is restricting recruitment because of an £18million deficit. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust is to cut 300 of its 5,000 staff to help fill an £8m deficit.
SERVICES CUT
Trafford NHS Trust in Greater Manchester is cancelling 24-hour care.
WARDS CLOSED
One in three nurses say wards are being shut.
COMMUNITY HOSPITALS
Nearly 100 have been threatened with closure. The Community Hospitals Association said 1,405 of their beds had been closed
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Cuts imposed on Oxfordshire Mental Healthcare NHS Trust of £2.7million this year and a further £5.3million over the next three years.
