Should President Sarkozy hang up his running shoes?
Hard work: Nicolas Sarkozy jogging in Central Park
With his muscular and compact frame, French president Nicolas Sarkozy made his morning runs in New York's Central Park look like a lot of effort.
Jogging is a great way to improve aerobic fitness and it is also a very functional way to exercise: we all need to run for a train or after a child every now and again. But is it suitable for everyone?
Our bodies are built primarily for interval (short-burst) training rather than long-distance running and depending on your size and weight there may be other forms of exercise that would suit your body better.
President Sarkozy has more weight in the form of muscle to carry - therefore he is putting a great deal of impact on his joints (ankles, knees and hips in particular). Joints will adapt and the connective tissue around them will get stronger as a result of jogging.
However, long-distance runs can be detrimental to someone of his frame, so to avoid injury I recommend aerobic exercise three times a week for 30 minutes but alternate jogging with swimming and cycling. Cardio-respiratory exercise is best when it leaves you slightly breathless - not bent double with exhaustion.
