Bones: Ribs
Despite the biblical belief that God took one of Adam's ribs to make Eve, both sexes have 24 or 12 pairs, though about 5 per cent of the population has an extra pair. Ribs assist in the breathing process through the intercostalis, a short muscle that squeezes each together.
People with asthma or bronchitis can get barrel-shaped chests because their lungs become chronically enlarged and push out the ribs. 'Pigeon' chests are usually the result of breathing problems early in life. One of the first signs of a heart attack is a squeezing pain or uncomfortable pressure at the centre of the chest lasting more than two minutes.
