Organs: Intestines
We have 7.8m (26ft) of intestine - the small intestine is 6.3m (21ft) long and the large intestine is 1.5m (5ft). The small intestine is lined with villi which have a surface area of up to40 square metres. If not for the villi, the small intestine would need to be more than two mileslong to do its job of absorbing nutrients from food.
About 1kg (2Ib) of bacteria live in the gut. And up to 400 types of bacteria live in the colon section of the intestine. Food passes through the small intestine in just two hours at a speed of 0.002mph, but takes about 14 hours to pass through the large intestine at a more leisurely rate of 0.00007mph.
