Appendix
The appendix, a 7.5cm to 15cm (3-6in) long cul-de-sac attached to the cecum, part of the colon, has no known function. It is thought that it may have helped our ancient ancestors digest insects or even tree bark. It can rupture at any time and, if this happens, infection spreads rapidly.
Appendicitis is the most frequent of all abdominal emergencies and second only to repair of hernias as a reason for abdominal surgery. Appendicitis affects all age groups, and both sexes, but is often missed until after the appendix has perforated and peritonitis has occurred.
