Big night for Brits at the Oscars

• It was a good year all round for the Brits at the Oscars. Celebrating at the Governors Ball was Jan Archibald, with her best hair and make-up Oscar for La Vie En Rose on a table by her.

(Jan, who lives in Central London, has also just done the towering wigs for Keira Knightley and Hayley Atwell on The Duchess.)

On the other side of the room, another British winner, Ben Morris, observed: "We have the best craftsmen in the world: real artists who know how to make films. The only problem is, we always need American money to get them off the ground."

Morris and Trevor Wood took Oscars, with two American colleagues, for the visual effects they created - along with a 1,000-strong team - for The Golden Compass.

• Chelsea lost to Spurs last Sunday but, for once, Daniel Battsek - one of the the club's biggest fans this side of the Atlantic - wasn't bothered.

At least not by the time No Country For Old Men had won four Oscars and There Will Be Blood had snared two.

Battsek is the British-born head of Miramax Films, which distributed No Country in the U.S. and There Will Be Blood in Britain, in partnership with Paramount Vantage.

Battsek was surrounded by all the Oscar statuettes at the after-party Miramax threw at Bar Marmont on Sunset Boulevard.

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem (best supporting actor winner) jived and sang, Bardem doing a damn good Mick Jagger impression as Sympathy For The Devil blasted out.
