  • Which leading lady lost the new man in her life at the post-Oscars bash thrown by Vanity Fair magazine at Morton's in Beverly Hills?

    Step forward Cate Blanchett. No sooner had Cate won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Aviator than she lost her Oscar statuette.

    Unflustered, Cate held court with the likes of Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Penelope Cruz, Clive Owen and Adam Sandler. It was only as the party was winding down at 2am that her Oscar reappeared as mysteriously as he had gone missing.

  • Not such a pukka performance from Jamie Oliver, who turned up at the Morton's bash wearing a light-coloured suit that was clearly in breach of the black tie rules for Oscar night.

    Even so, the celebrity chef seemed very much at home chatting to various Hollywood luminaries. He explained that the previous night he and his team had cooked for several hundred guests at 'The Night Before Party', held in aid of charity.

  • She may have flown the flag for Britain at the ceremony, but Kate Winslet was not in party mood. It wasn't that she was upset at losing out in the Best Actress category for her wonderful performance in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. It's just that she and husband Sam Mendes had to be at work in the morning. "Sam's got to be on the set of his film at 5am, and I'm taking the kids and my parents on a plane to New Orleans first thing in the morning," the four-time-nominated actress said as she and Mendes left the Board of Governors ball. She was needed on set with Sean Penn and Jude Law for the film All The Kings Men.

  • On A night when Hollywood is packed bumper to bumper with limousines, it's hard to arrive in style on Oscar night. But Elizabeth Taylor managed just that at Elton John's party. Despite age and infirmity (it was her 73rd birthday on Sunday) Taylor still showed up to support Elton's Aids fundraiser - taken in by a wheelchair.

  • Recently separated Sir Ben Kingsley tried to work his charms on Winona Ryder, who is 30 years his junior. They were spotted deep in conversation at agent Ed Limato's after-show party. Sir Ben, 61, who recently announced that his ten-month marriage to Alexandra Christmann was over, told Ryder: "Now, you must be really afraid of me. I'm totally available!"

  • Life is sweet for Sophie Okonedo, despite losing out in the Best Supporting Actress category. The British actress was overwhelmed by the £50,000 goody bag she received as a nominee. "I can't get the door open for gifts," she exclaimed.
