Our AI Initiatives
Understanding AI’s Impact on Education and Kids
At Common Sense, we believe AI must work for everyone—especially in schools and with kids, teens, and families. That means building AI systems that are safe, responsible, ethical, and inclusive by design. We believe that these systems can't replace the things that make us human: our critical thinking, our curiosity, our human connection, our creativity, and our agency. But if developed and deployed intentionally, AI can further these attributes and expand our human capacities.
Read about our approach
Our approach is straightforward:
- Research: We make decisions based on evidence, not hype.
- Review: We evaluate AI tools with rigorous risk-based assessments.
- Educate: We develop the knowledge and skills that empower school communities to share AI's benefits equitably.
- Advocate: We champion responsible innovation while insisting on reasonable safeguards, transparency, and accountability.
As we influence the trajectory of this emerging technology, we take a whole-community approach and support all of the stakeholders responsible for any given kid, addressing both AI's immediate impacts as well as the long-term consequences. This means we're committed to helping families, educators, and policymakers navigate AI's challenges and opportunities by providing clear, trustworthy guidance, advocating for strong protections, and ensuring that AI systems support rather than replace human connection and creativity.
