Abel Alvarado is a News Producer, Video for CNN’s International News Hub based in Atlanta.

A bilingual Ecuadorian journalist with nearly 20 years of editorial experience and multiple News and Documentary Emmy Award nominations, Alvarado joined CNN’s International Video team in October 2023.

He has worked on major news stories including the death of Pope Francis in Argentina, CNN’s exclusive access to El Salvador’s maximum-security prison, Cecot, and an investigation into Chinese migrants entering the US through Ecuador without a visa. He has also reported extensively on the immigration crisis along the US-Mexico border.

In August 2025, Alvarado produced a documentary for The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper on drug trafficking in Ecuador. He also played a key role in CNN’s coverage of Ecuador’s election, securing an exclusive interview with President Daniel Noboa.

Alvarado previously worked on CNN en Español’s assignment desk, where he coordinated coverage with global bureaus, field teams and producers in addition to serving as a substitute anchor during breaking news.

In the field, he reported on major events including the Uvalde school shooting in 2022, the Haiti earthquake in 2021, the George Floyd protests in 2020, Ecuador’s protests in 2019, the Ecuador earthquake in 2016 and the refugee crisis on the Jordan-Syria border in 2013.

Prior to CNN, Alvarado briefly worked for Telemundo as a correspondent in Ecuador and spent nearly a decade as a reporter and anchor at Ecuavisa, one of the country’s leading networks.

Raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Alvarado studied International Journalism at Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo.
