A powerful storm tracking through the Southeast will intensify off the East Coast this weekend amid brutal cold. This bomb cyclone will bring heavy snow and strong winds to parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic as it tracks north.
The storm is expected to bring wind up the Atlantic coastline, but its worst conditions will be in North Carolina, South Carolina and southern Virginia.
More than 27 million people on the East Coast are under winter storm warnings. Alerts for frigid cold are also in effect as far south as South Florida.
Unlike last weekend’s storm, this one won’t threaten ice, too — just heavy snow.
The most widespread accumulating snow is expected from southern Virginia and the Carolinas to parts of Georgia.
The bomb cyclone will also deliver strong winds to the coast. The combination of gusty winds and snow can quickly cause whiteouts.
Powerful winds will also whip up very rough surf and trigger coastal flooding. They will also make the cold air feel that much worse.
Wind chills or “feels like” temperatures — how cold the air actually feels to your body — will crash well below freezing for nearly every location impacted by the storm.
It will be dangerous to be outside for extended periods of time or to be without power in this cold.
Power outages still remain in the South following the catastrophic ice impacts of last weekend’s storm.
Any new outages from this storm are most likely to happen in areas near the coast.
