CINDY Cindy loves reading thought-provoking fiction, social issues and history books. In the end, it's not the story, but how the story is told and the sentence structure that keeps her reading. Often, she can be found in the craft/art/gardening aisle at the store seeking inspiration. |
These “micro-memoirs” are brief, powerful essays about the relationships that have shaped the author’s life. Some are only a single sentence, while others span several pages. Woven through these pieces is a recurring theme of family, loss, and growth, capturing the uncertainties that define how we move through the world. Though small in size, the book resonates deeply, reminding us how difficult—and how beautiful—life’s journey can be.
I loved this book. It’s a collection of essays by two women who share their memoir in alternating chapters, telling the story of how they chose to live together in South Korea. They’re not romantic partners, but two professional women who recognize the value of shared expenses and companionship. This is a tender, thoughtful collection about friendship, differences, independence, and breaking societal norms.
This novel is built through stories of broken hearts and how letting go can be reclaimed through sharing stories and a special meal. This novel tells the story of a small community coming together to create space for recovery. This is quirky novel is filled with quirky characters set in a corner of Japan. Joyride is partially a memoir of a writer's life and partially a memoir of her stories, from idea origin to completion. Orlean is an incredible non-fiction writer and reading the story of her stories was illuminating - a glance into a skilled writer's process. This book serves as a memoir of a woman becoming a journalist and a writing guide for all non-fiction writers. It was a joyful read. .
This is beautiful memoir about loss and grief which ties together the loss of objects due to a theft and the loss of a person due to suicide. It is a portrait of a friendship and what loss means in a holistic manner. It is beautifully written and helps me share the experience of grief through the power of words.
This is a love story told in moments with every word holding intention. It is a love story between a couple and all the intricacies and challenges of being in a relationship. It is a love story about Central Park which becomes a character unto itself. This novel is powerful and complicated and no word is wasted. Parts of this story are told in second person, which is not for every reader. Voices weave in and out creating an intimate experience in the reading. It is a treasure. A comp: History of Love by Nicole Krauss
This coming of age novel jumps between the 1980's and 2019. Our main character is a transman dealing with the loss of his mother, reconnecting with his sister and looking back on his past. This story is simply beautiful - a story of love, loss, childhood and reckoning with self-identity as outsiders. A beautiful story shining a light on details of a world unexpected.
I first discovered the artist Sophie Calle through the writings of Paul Auster. Calle is a social engagement artists. "True Stories" was first published in French. With photographs and writing side by side, this becomes a memoir of meditation. These stories inspire a connection to love, heartbreak, vulnerability, and play.
This beautiful novel is structured through a series of vignettes told from the point of view of a young Japanese mother and widow, Kyoko, who is raising her son, Alex, in America after her husband’s unexpected death. The story connects the threads of her Japanese family and his Jewish family, grief, love and where and how life is lived after loss. It is a beautiful cultural novel of human connection.
Groff's brilliant prose and pacing sets the rhythm for a servant girl escaping colonial Jamestown and fleeing through the wildness. She is completely alone and through her journey, we learn her present, her past and a desired future. This is a remarkable piece of writing and storytelling which shines a mirror to the modern day experience of being alone, of being a woman and going after something better.
Through Ward's incredible prose, we are taken on a journey. Our main character moves through the bounds of slavery, through harsh realism while wrapped in the powers of her ancestors' spirits and love for their future. “The first weapon I ever held was my Mother’s hand”. I was unable to put this down.
This was a complete joy to read. I would find myself rushing to the book and then slowing down in order to savor it. Kwame Alexander (KM) gifts us with a memoir written in prose, poetry and recipe. Each word leaves a mark. KM gives his whole self - his loves, his heart breaks. He is honest and vulnerable. His words and experiences inspired me to love more, to accept and acknowledge heartbreak, and to fill my life with poetry, cooking and music. It is beautiful.
This book is lighthearted, thoughtful and educational and serves my desire to continue developing professionally and as a community member at large. Dan Lyons outlines and demonstrates the power of what happens when we ask ourselves to Shut the "F" Up. I learned from this book and I am practicing daily. We already know that if we listen more we become better citizens. Challenging ourselves to Shutting the "F" up is a another approach to this intention.

This is a beautiful novel that takes place in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn within the lunar month of Ramadan. This is a story of a Muslim family in the modern world , and it is a coming of age story between siblings, as they maneuver through their adolescence and the hostilities at large at home. The writing is passionate and I could not put it down
Without a doubt this is one of the most powerful and beautiful novels I've read this year. The stories that make up this novel are woven together from a variety of voices that center around one main character demonstrating the complexity of families and the complexities of indigenous tribal communities. This story speaks to the impact of systematic racism, family bonds and endurance. A must read! I couldn't put it down.
