In looking for some Christmas themed comic strips, I stumbled upon the panel running in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in December 1966 under the title "Leo." It's definitely the same strip, as it has the same character and Lardner's signature on it. I didn't look into 1967, but it looks like it made it to the end of the year in at least one paper.
