The Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education, also called the School Board, is comprised of five elected directors (also called “members”) and two student directors, one chosen from Berkeley High, and the other Berkeley Technology Academy. The School Board represents the public’s voice in public education, providing governance over the school district. The School Board is responsible for employing and evaluating the Superintendent; adopting policies, curriculum, and the District’s budget; overseeing the maintenance and development of facilities in the District; and negotiating and adopting collective bargaining agreements with the District’s four unions.Members are elected in staggered four-year terms, with two seats on the Board up for election in November of Presidential election years, and three seats in the following even-numbered November election.
Notice of Provisional Appointment of Beatriz Leyva-Cutler to the Board of Education
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a vacancy occurred on the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education on July 1, 2026 as a result of the resignation of Director Ana Vasudeo. The resignation was filed on June 30, 2026, and became effective on June 30, 2026.
On August 19, 2026, the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education provisionally appointed Beatriz Leyva-Cutler to fill the vacancy.
Unless a petition call for a special election, containing a sufficient number of signatures, is filed in the office of the Alameda County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of the date of the appointment, the provisional appointment shall become and effective appointment.
This notice is provided pursuant to California Education Code section 5092.
