Meaning & History

Combination of Old Norse hyrr "fire" and a second element of debated meaning. Proposed interpretations of the second element are "steamer", "curly, wrinkled", "withered", and "smoked". Hyrrokkin is a jötunn (giantess) in Norse mythology. She launched Baldr's funeral ship, Hringhorni, after all the other Aesir gods were unable to.
