Man in his 60s dies after suspected hit and run

A man in his 60s has died after being found with injuries in Dungiven, County Londonderry, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The police are investigating how he died but believe he may have been involved in a hit-and-run.

Police received a report that an injured man had been found on the Foreglen Road at 01:35 GMT.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but has since died.

Sinn Féin councillor Kathleen McGurk described the man's death as a tragedy and appealed for anyone with information to give it to the police.

"We believe he's not actually from the Dungiven area but that he was in the Dungiven area that evening," she told BBC Radio Foyle's North West Today programme.

"I believe he was known to quite a few members of the community and, yes, certainly I think people are just in shock that this has happened."

Police are appealing for any information, witnesses and dash-cam footage.
