Power and water outages have continued in some areas of the Izu island chain, south of Tokyo, following two consecutive typhoons that caused heavy damage to infrastructure.

The Tokyo metropolitan government, which has jurisdiction over the islands, convened a meeting on Oct. 14 to address the damage from Typhoon Nos. 22 and 23.

While no casualties have been confirmed, heavy rain and strong winds from the storms damaged or destroyed many buildings, particularly on Hachijojima island.

Typhoon No. 22 neared the island chain on Oct. 9, followed by Typhoon No. 23 on Oct. 13.

As of the morning of Oct. 14, about 500 households on Hachijojima island were without electricity, and 152 people had taken shelter at two evacuation centers.

In addition, some areas remain cut off from communications and water supply services, with no timeline yet for restoration.

Some roads have been closed due to fallen trees and the risk of landslides.

The Tokyo metropolitan government and related agencies are assessing the extent of the damage and working to restore essential services.

Anticipating prolonged evacuations, authorities are considering support not only in delivering necessary supplies but also in helping evacuees relocate to secondary shelters.
