Banpeiyu ripening Dec. 10 in a greenhouse in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture (Kengo Hiyoshi)
YATSUSHIRO, Kumamoto Prefecture--Newly ripened banpeiyu, considered by many to be the king of citrus fruits, are now arriving in the marketplace in time for the year-end and New Year holidays.
Yatsushiro in Kyushu is the nation’s largest producer of what is the one of the largest citrus fruits.
Farmer Kiyokazu Fukuda proudly showed off his harvested pomelos at his greenhouse in this southern Japan city.
Each specimen measures about 20 centimeters in diameter and weighs around 2 kilograms. They are lined up in a row, exuding a sweet fragrance.
The banpeiyu were exposed to sunlight for the past 10 days or so to help the ripening process.
“This year, the temperature in October was higher than usual, so the fruit ripened about 10 days later than usual,” Fukuda said. “But they are big and sweet enough.”
Shipments will continue until February.
