Religions of the Roman Empire

Malaria has long ranked among the most serious health threats in human history, a reality that was also reflected in certain regions of the Roman Empire. This article investigates the cultural impact of malaria on Roman society, particularly in terms of the distribution of ancient healing cults dedicated to Asclepius and Apollo, which functioned as one of the key medical institutions of the time. Our approach combines traditional historiographical methods with a spatial analysis using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to assess whether a meaningful spatial correlation existed between malaria and Roman healing cults. The Roman territories of Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia are of particular interest, as the distribution of malaria in these areas can be reconstructed using a digitized version of the Torelli map, a 19th-century pre-eradication source that is spatially in agreement with literary and archaeological evidence of malaria in Roman times. Within a GIS environment, epigraphic evidence of ancient healing cults was used to evaluate their spatial relationship with malaria-prone zones as represented in the Torelli map, alongside a comparative analysis involving inscriptions of other selected Roman deities. In our research, we considered both the proportional intensity of the worship of healing cults and their spatial proximity in relation to malaria-prone zones. The results provide significant support for the hypothesis that malaria risk was a contributory factor in the spread of the healing cults of Asclepius and Apollo.

Excavation of the Roman tilery at Little London, Pamber, Hampshire, has prompted a reassessment of the dating of relief-patterned tile, assigning the bulk of production to the Claudio-Neronian period rather than the late first to mid-/late second century. This material has been privileged for retention in excavation archives but can now be seen as a proxy for the manufacture of a much wider range of ceramic building material, typically discarded on site, which, in the case of products from Little London and pre-Flavian Minety (Wiltshire), travelled distances of up to 100 km. Redating implies more extensive public and private building in town and country south and east of the Fosse Way before the Flavian period than has previously been envisaged. El asentamiento institucional del culto imperial en las municipios y colonias de la Bética conllevó el surgimiento de una estructura sacerdotal jerarquizada en la que se integraron los individuos pertenecientes a los núcleos de poder de las ciudades, dando lugar a un nuevo espacio en el que las élites cívicas pudieron ejercer sus deseos de autorrepresentación urbana. Sin embargo, su creación ex novo en época imperial trajo como consecuencia el desarrollo de una situación bastante alejada de la tradición romana republicana desde el punto de vista de la organización institucional de los sacerdocios. Ello, junto a su notable ausencia en las leyes municipales de época flavia, ha provocado que las cuestiones orgánicas o más propiamente institucionales de los cargos religiosos de culto imperial hayan constituido una importante laguna historiográfica a la que pretendemos aproximarnos a partir de los nuevos hallazgos epigráficos y el estudio de las circunstancias históricas que definieron el origen y difusión del culto al emperador en el ámbito cívico.

The names of the gods in the ancient Mediterranean constitute a hot topic which receives renewed attention in modern scholarship the latest years. Studies dealing with ancient religions often revolve around the deities: their representation, names, religious perception, but also rituals and practices. Often, the structure built to worship and house the deity, or deities, is often ignored or purely examined as a built complex, rather than the economic and social institution of the temple. This panel proposes to explore the issue of temples as economic and social institutions in the eastern Mediterranea, including Greater Syria, Judaea/Palaestina, Asia Minor and Arabia. There is general agreement that Mark 13, Matt 24–25, and Luke 21 reflect knowledge of the Jewish War. Luke 21 is particularly obvious as a post-War vaticinium ex eventu, but few commentators have attended to Luke 21:25’s redaction of Mark 13:24–25 within this post-War framework. This article argues that Luke 21:25 might be illuminated through comparison with a papyrus from Oxyrhynchus. This papyrus, P.Oxy. 4950, offers an astrological interpretation of Vespasian’s rise – including events of the Jewish War. P.Oxy. 4950 bears remarkable similarities to the Eschatological Discourse, being an ex eventu oracle predicting Vespasian’s victory in the Year of the Four Emperors, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the suffering of the Jewish population. Luke made a number of intentional decisions in modifying Mark so as to also evoke – in a vague and generalized way – astrological portents associated with Vespasian’s rise, the type of predictions found in P.Oxy. 4950 and recorded by other ancient writers (e.g., Josephus, Suetonius, Tacitus).

Communication with divine agencies was a recurrent feature of Roman everyday life (Smart 1996; Rüpke 2018: 1–18). Scholarship has focused especially on legal aspects of sacralised spaces (Szabó 2017) and ritual traditions (mores) in Roman religion (Scheid 1995). But Roman religion was not only a matter of strictly defined legal traditions and performative, public rituals, it was also an ever-changing and organic form of communication between human and divine agencies producing a kaleidoscope of strategies and media to maintain the dialogue between the living and the divine (Albrecht et al. 2018; Rüpke & Woolf 2021). The materiality of religion is one of the most visible and powerful tools in this communication. Materiality comes with a rich literature and many attempts at a definition (Morgan 2016) and enables us to interrogate the interconnected relationship between objects (‘stuff’: Miller 2009) and human behaviour. As a result of the so-called material turn, recent scholarship on the materiality of religion interprets objects not only as tools of religious communication, but as actants, with a limited power of agency of their own (Pitts & Versluys 2021).

Au-dessus, et parfois retaillant les anciennes sépultures, 27 tombes à inhumation sont cependant très voisines de date : les cercueils sont en troncs de chêne, comme en Sabine ; les particularités rituelles ne sont pas différentes de celles des incinérants. Il a pu s'exercer des influences réciproques : dans une tombe à inhumation reposaient en une urne conique les restes incinérés d'un homme jeune. Sommesnous en présence d'une partie de la nécropole du Palatin, distant d'une centaine de mètres ? La découverte près de l'Arc d'Auguste, presque à mi-chemin, de tombes à incinération dont l'une du type le plus ancien (fin du 1x° ou début du vite siècle) permet de l'imaginer. D'autre part, le Mont Palatin lui-même a livré sur sa croupe Sud (le Palatual) une tombe d'enfant inhumé vers la fin du vrie siècle sous la cabane de ses parents : nous reviendrons sur ce rite particulier des incinérants. Mais aussi, proche de la Maison de Livie (sur le Cermal), une tombe à crémation, du milieu environ du vire siècle : l'urne ovale coiffée d'un couvercle en toit de cabane. La présomption de villages distincts sur la colline même s'en trouve affermie. Un dépôt de déblais votifs (favissa) du premier âge du fer dans la légère dépression qui distingue Cermal et Palatual paraît le confirmer. L'Esquilin (plus précisément la pente Est de l'Oppius) a donné un cimetière étendu de tombes à inhumation, dont le matériel, plus riche, se date à partir de la fin du vire siècle. Mais aussi quatre tombes d'incinérants, dont trois sont plus jeunes que celles du Forum, mais avec une urne-cabane. On parlerait d'un peuplement un peu plus tardif et d'une rapide prédominance « sabine » si les fouilles avaient été plus systématiquement menées en profondeur. Au Quirinal ont été relevées cinq tombes, toutes à inhumation : trop peu pour qu'une conclusion soit risquée. Le Capitole, qui devait rester pendant des siècles en dehors de l'enceinte religieuse de Rome, était pourtant fréquenté : une favissa y atteste un ou des cultes au vire siècle. Il serait cependant imprudent de lui attribuer une nécropole particulière au Forum, entre sa pente Sud et le Comilium, d'après 24 : 5. -LE PROBLÈME DES INTERFÉRENCES ITALO-ÉTRUSQUES. Ainsi se suivent, du début du vire siècle jusque vers la fin du vie, les progrès conjoints de l'occupation du sol et de la religion romaine sans mutations appréciables du fonds italique. Cependant la tradition annalistique affirmait que, 138 ans _ après la fondation romuléenne (selon les calculs de Varron), Rome était tombée, vers 616 avant notre ère et pour plus de cent ans, aux mains de princes étrusques (ou « tyrrhéniens »). M. Einar Gjerstad, qui, repensant toute cette chronologie, fait commencer l'âge royal à la concentration de l'Urbs autour du Forum, vers -575, n'accorderait qu'un peu plus d'un demi-siècle à la domination tyrrhénienne sur Rome (de -509 _ à -450), en admettant d'ailleurs qu'elle avait été précédée _ d'une osmose. De toute façon se pose la question : comment la Ville et sa religion réagirent-elles à l'emprise d'une civilisation très originale ? Organiquement, nous le verrons, la religion latine a sauve-_ gardé ses cadres sacerdotaux, ses cérémonies anciennes, ses dieux (avec quelques emprunts), sa psychologie des rapports entre les hommes et les puissances divines. En matière de calendrier, d'interprétation et de procuralio (aménagement) des prodiges, d'examen « scientifique » des entrailles des victimes » (par les haruspices), elle subit l'influence de l'organisa-. tion étrusque et de sa « révélation sacrée ». Chaque cas particulier oblige à faire entre l'ancien et l'acquis un départ fort _ délicat, très souvent hypothétique. Aussi bien est-ce fort peu de chose qu'un siècle même pour modifier une religion : d'autant moins celle d'un peuple qui s'était révélé aussi tenace en son archaïsme tout au long de ses migrations. Et surtout _ nous devons nous représenter non la contrainte d'une civilisation massivement surimposée, mais, sous des chefs étrangers, l'implantation d'une minorité de Tyrrhéniens et, de leur fait, la multiplication des contacts et des échanges entre l'ancienne population latino-sabine et les grandes cités étrusquisantes au Nord et au Sud du Tibre. Camero Nuevo (La Rioja, Spain) preserves a group of Roman-period funerary stelae featuring anthropomorphic decoration, traditionally interpreted as funerary portraits. This study offers an iconographic and iconological analysis of their most representative elements: the triadic grouping of figures, the bust-like depiction, the emphasis on the head, and the radiate disc. Two of the tombstones, from Ortigosa and Villoslada, depict the figures with female attributions through the schematic representation of breasts. We propose a new interpretation, considering the Celtic substratum and the attested cult of the Matres and other plural female deities in the same area. This analysis offers a deeper insight into the iconography associated with sovereign deities governing both this life and the afterlife, as well as certain dance-related rituals linked to the renewal of nature. Rezumat. El Camero Nuevo (La Rioja, Spania) păstrează un grup de stele funerare din perioada romană cu decor antropomorf, interpretate ca portrete funerare. Această lucrare prezintă un studiu iconografic și iconologic al elementelor sale cele mai reprezentative: gruparea figurilor în număr de trei, reprezentarea sub formă de bust, accentul pe cap și discul radiat. Două dintre pietre funerare, cele ale lui Ortigosa și Villoslada, încorporează caracterizarea feminină a figurilor prin reprezentarea schematică a sânilor. Articolul propune o nouă interpretare, ținând cont de substratul celtic și de cultul Matres atestat în aceeași zonă și alte divinități feminine de natură plurală. Această analiză oferă o perspectivă mai profundă asupra iconografiei asociate cu divinitățile suverane care guvernează atât această viață, cât și viața de apoi, precum și asupra anumitor rituri legate de dans, asociate cu reînnoirea naturii.

In this article, I analyze paragraphs about Marcus Aurelius's face. Marcus Aurelius's philosophy was visible not only in his actions and lifestyle, but also in his facial expressions, which betrayed no emotion. In addition to discussing the passages on Marcus Aurelius's face, I also juxtapose them with the passages on the faces of other emperors. Biographers, historians and poets described the appearance of rulers in order to be able to portray their character and nature more deeply, and a calm countenance is one of the primary ways in which the face of a ruler is praised in antiquity. A comparison of paragraphs on the face of the different emperors will place the tradition about Marcus Aurelius in context. The study furthermore analyses a set of testimonies about the calm face of Socrates, since, next to Marcus Aurelius, he was supposed to be the philosopher who, regardless of the circumstances, did not betray any emotion on his face. At the end of the article I also discuss the sources on Publius Clodius Thrasea Petus. The present work is the first study on the face of Marcus Aurelius, complementing research on the ruler's stoicism with the hitherto overlooked phenomenon of the face as a testimony of virtue.

Der Beitrag zeichnet das Verhältnis von Religion und Wirtschaft und die großen Linien und Traditionen in dessen Entwicklung in der europäischen Antike (ca. 800 v. Chr. bis ca. 500 n. Chr.) nach. Dabei stützt sich der Beitrag vor allem auf Erkenntnisse und Kategorien der Religionsökonomie. Religion wird zum einen als Wirtschaftsfaktor behandelt. Dabei stehen die Finanzierung von Kult und Kultpersonal genauso im Vordergrund wie die wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen, die neue Möglichkeiten religiöser Verehrung schufen. Zum anderen wird Religion als moralisch-ethische Instanz beleuchtet. Hier wird gezeigt, wie religiöse Vorstellungen das Wirtschaften prägten und neue moralische Bewertungen von Reichtum hervorbrachten. Die Ergebnisse, die aus solchen Fragestellungen anhand eines reichen Fundus an epigraphischen, literarischen und archäologischen Quellen gewonnen werden, tragen zum besseren Verständnis von Religion und Wirtschaft auch im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert in Deutschland bei. Die Betrachtung über den langen Zeitraum öffnet den Blick für die großen Linien und Traditionen der Entwicklung des Verhältnisses von Religion und Wirtschaft in der europäischen Geschichte. Zugleich stellt der Vergleich mit der polytheistischen Religionspraxis der vorchristlichen Antike klarer heraus, worin die welthistorischen Besonderheiten der monotheistisch-eschatologischen Traditionen bestehen, die das Verhältnis von Religion und Wirtschaft nach der Antike bestimmt haben.

It is noteworthy that most of the cited publications on Jaina statuette-altars,
where inscriptions are read, lack their modern language translation. There are no in depth
linguistic analyzes of the monuments, as well as paleographic observations.
Obviously, the creation of databases of such epigraphic material is forthcoming,
and the sea of such examples is huge. Accepting this text with a specific object
of research as an opportunity to introduce the Bulgarian scientific community in
general to Jainism and some of its philosophical-aesthetic aspects, we allow ourselves
to conclude that the statuette-altar described here is, after all, a souvenir. Objects
related to the Jaina cult that can be found by devotees and those interested are still
quite limited in India against the backdrop of the vast number of objects related to
Buddhism and Hinduism. In this particular case, we have a brass copy of an altar
statuette with a central image of Parshva, which repeats a dedicatory inscription of
a family living in the late 13th century. It was certainly produced by under-trained
master casters who did not know the details of traditional Jaina iconography, and
this happened in the middle of the 19th century. The statuette functioned in a family
environment, where it was periodically subjected to a ‘purification’ ritual with
sandalwood paste and water, which resulted in its smoothing in certain less-than representative
areas of the metal. Here we subjected the artifact to metal testing,
which led to the conclusion that not only bronze, but also brass copies of similar
images are sold in modern museums and on the antiques market. We also found
out that the silver content in the highlight of the central character’s eyes is also important in determining its authenticity.

The Image of the Ruler on the Reliefs of Tiglath-pileser III. Elements, Motifs, and Composition.

The present work is based on information from 17 reliefs (or their drawings) discovered in Nimrud (ancient Calah) and Arslan-tash (ancient Hadatu) during XIX and XX century. All monuments describe the image of Tiglath-pileser III in different by meaning and form scenes.
The first part of the study (Source’s base: the monuments from Calah and Arslan-Tash) presents a review on the source’s base in relation to its origin. The sources are divided in three subgroups according to their form: reliefs and drawings from XIX century, drawings of lost reliefs and reliefs found later without drawings (Table 1). Most of the monuments come from Calah (15), the other from Hadatu (2).
The second part of the study (Elements of the ruler’s image) examines some particular elements on the images in a comparative perspective: royal insignia — a crown, a scepter and a bow, royal dress, necklace as also the pose of the royal body on the monuments. The elements depict ruler’s figure on a basic level of reading and allow its easy identification on scenes.
The third part of the study (Motives with the ruler’s image) investigates the king on scenes pertaining to three ideologically defined motives: audience and review of prisoners (8 artifacts), processions of triumph (6 artifacts), and battles (2 artifacts). Every motive is expressed by a different scheme of figures based on features like situation, pose and role of the ruler, presence or absence of other persons. The scenes attest great variety within the treatment of similar situations and allow the proposal of working typology (Table 2). Motive 1 (audiences) can be divided in four types of scenes, Motive 2 (triumphs) — in three types, and Motive 3 (battles) — in two types of scenes. The motives depict the king in relation to other figures, on a higher, second level of reading and allow his identification in specific situations, sometimes connected to historical events.
The last part of the paper (Semantic of the motives. The ruler’s image within compositions) investigates the scenes with ruler’s image within compositions consisting of subjects-matter pertaining to different motives. All reliefs explored here were dismantled in the antiquity. So, the exact arrangement of the monuments in wider narrative schemes remain obscure or at least, disputable. Exceptions of the observation said are the monuments belonging to the narratives about the Babylonian campaign, the Triumph from Arslan-tash and partly to the Arab campaign. Only half of the artifacts — eight in number, can be situated in relation to some other relief or group of reliefs. The other eight reliefs with the king have uncertain arrangement. The compositions allow the identification of ruler’s image on a third level of reading and place his figure in a wider historical context. The leading role of the monarch is outlined on every level of reading. The motives preserved depict him as a king-ruler, a triumphant king and a king-warrior, sending propagandistic messages for his abilities and invincibility. The messages are not new, even when they contain novelties, and are in harmony with traditions attested in earlier monuments of this type.

Two stone panels with images of Silvanus and a female deity -
usually recognised as an indigenous interpretation of Diana - were discovered by chance in what seems to be an original context, together with a pot, an inscription and two coins. Unfortunately, some panels of the original assemblage, such as the inscription and one of the coins, did not make it to the museum in Sarajevo and are forever lost for scholarship. Earlier scholarship focused exclusively on the typology of the images and their place in the cult of the Dalmatian Silvanus. However, this discovery in a dear indigenous context still provides a unique opportunity to get an insight into some theoretical aspects of indigenous spiritual life in early Roman Dalmatia, which will be explored in this paper. This, in particular, refers to the issues of ritual, indigenous literacy and knowledge of Latin, the adaptation of Mediterranean and Roman imperial religious templates, the function and meaning of artifacts and assemblages in religious worship, etc.

All'epoca di Augusto i cambiamenti in ambito religioso furono grandissimi. Augusto e i futuri imperatori divinizzati non erano solo degli dèi in più rispetto al pantheon tradizionale, perché la loro natura non era propriamente uguale a quella degli altri dèi, e a provarlo basterebbe il fatto che non erano detti dei ma divi. Le speculazioni teologiche che furono fatte in merito agli imperatori divinizzati furono fra le più raffinate e complesse. Anche l'organizzazione sacerdotale fu diversa da quella per il vecchio culto degli dèi. Un aspetto poco conosciuto di questo ambito della religione romana è il ruolo del culto di Apollo come forma di culto imperiale, o, per lo meno, del culto di certi imperatori. Augusto scelse Apollo come suo protettore e i poeti e gli artisti di epoca augustea fecero quanto era nelle loro possibilità per creare analogie e proporre forme di identificazione fra il principe e il dio. Quest'opera ideologica, politicamente molto rilevante, determinò una diversa valorizzazione di Apollo in età imperiale. Questo dio, per altro, era ormai definitivamente identificato con il dio Sole, e l'iconografia del sole prevalse progressivamente su quella di Apollo citaredo, ma senza dubbio Apollo e Sol erano sentiti come un'unica divinità. Apollo medico fu pressoché dimenticato. Al vecchio dio supremo della repubblica, Giove, si affiancava e sovrapponeva il dio dell'impero: Apollo. Con ciò si spiega la costante incertezza su quale fosse il dio supremo di Roma in epoca imperiale. La famosa IV Bucolica di Virgilio proclamava: tuus iam regnat Apollo 1 . Apollo pertanto era una manifestazione di Augusto. Apollo regnava in cielo quando Augusto regnava sulla terra. Servio interpretava i versi virgiliani in questo modo: Dicono che Virgilio intende per Apollo lo stesso Augusto. Dicendo tuus iam regnat Apollo indica l'ultimo secolo, che, secondo la Sibilla, sarebbe stato quello del Sole. E riguarda Augusto, per il quale fu fatta un'immagine con tutti i simboli di Apollo 2 .

This paper summarises the excavation undertaken in 2014 to the western edge of the 1st- to 4th- century Romano-British settlement at Bridge Farm, Wellingham by the Culver Archaeological Project (CAP). The excavation targeted a series of 13 large postholes in a rectangular formation plus 3 adjacent ditches, 2 hearths, and 2 large pits thought to be shallow wells. Many of the features penetrated the natural water table and produced an important range of Roman-period timbers, some of which proved to be exceedingly rare. The paper includes the full analysis of these timbers and summaries of the other finds collected and whilst some initial interpretation of the most significant features and artefacts has been included, this cannot constitute a final considered appraisal of what is just a small part of a much larger project which still requires many years of research to allow deeper understanding. Future results and analysis from other areas of the site will require subsequent papers and eventually a substantial monograph. However, this paper will acquaint readers with a significant feature of this site and some rare artefacts whilst also leading researchers towards sources of more detailed information.

A new published epigraphic documentation, consisting of African
tabellae auctioned in four lots in Great Britain between 2016 and
2017, brings to light a series of private deeds (wills and deeds
of purchase) dating from the « Late Roman Empire ». In fact,
texts are painted on wooden tablets, revealing a content similar
to that of famous Albertini Tablets dating from the Vandal period,
between 493 and 496 B.C., discovered in a contact zone between
the provinces of Byzacene and Numidie, not far from ancient
Capsa. They are also related to some twenty tablets discovered
in 1968 in south-eastern Algeria dating from Late Antiquity.

Un vaso metálico descubierto en Carthago Nova (Cartagena, Murcia) presenta en su parte exterior una inscripción romana que menciona a un nuevo gobernador de Hispania citerior, llamado S(purius) Lucretius Tricipitinus, y menciona el uso de sortes en un contexto probablemente oracular El nuevo gobernador está vinculado a diversos personajes mencionados en inscripciones descubiertas en la misma ciudad y a una marca sobre lingote de plomo, por lo que probablemente tenía intereses comerciales en este territorio.

Ces articles sur la religion romaine, réunis grâce à la bienveillance de mon successeur et ami, M. Georges Vallet, témoignent pour elle d'un intérêt qui ne s'est pas démenti de 1925 à ce jour (1). Les sujets vont de leur côté des origines de cette religion à l'époque où elle fait place au christianisme: c'est assez dire que la variété en est le caractère le plus apparent. On constatera peut-être aussi que les points de vue auxquels je me suis placé sont eux-mêmes d'une grande diversité. Ce sont cependant toujours ceux de quelqu'un, qui, comme tous les membres antiquaires de notre Ecole française de Rome, y est venu avec une formation dont la base à été constituée par les oeuvres des littératures anciennes et qui, dans sa carrière universitaire, s'est toujours consacré à l'étude de ces oeuvres. Je n'ai cessé de penser que la philologie doit rester le fondement même de nos recherches sur les religions anciennes. Sans doute nous avons appris au XIXe et peut-être plus encore au XXE siècle à élargir le champ de nos curiosités et, comme le dit M. Paul Veyne dans le livre génial qu'il vient de consacrer aux méthodes (et plutôt, à dire vrai, à l'absence de méthode) de l'histoire, à enrichir notre «topique». Nous ne séparons plus dans notre intérêt la personne et les ouvrages des écrivains de la société où ils ont vécu, se sont formés et dont ils sont, à maints égards, les représentants ou même les porte-paroles. A travers eux, grâce à eux, c'est à cette société que d'aventure nous nous intéressons. Aussi nous recherchons chez eux et à côté d'eux les documents qui nous renseignent sur tout ce que fut la vie d'un peuple. La linguistique, l'épigraphie, l'archéologie, l'ethnographie, d'autres sciences encore viennent à notre secours. J'estime néanmoins que le plus souvent l'art de lire les textes reste le plus court chemin et aussi le plus riche de promesses qui nous permette d'accéder à la connaissance de l'antiquité. Le jour où on trouverait quelque document sur son origine, si cette provenance était la Villa Hadriana de Tivoli, source de tant d'oeuvres d'art conservées dans les collections et les musées de Rome, l'énigme serait résolue. On remarquera que l'attention marquée dans le monnayage d'Hadrien pour l'Aiôn au zodiaque, pour les Génies des quatre saisons va dans le même sens de l'intérêt pour le calendrier dont Fulvius Nobilior déjà le mettait en relation avec le Dieu agissant dans le cosmos et qui donnait à Virgile occasion de témoigner de ce que j'ai appelé son sens cosmique. Les deux derniers articles de ce recueil ont trait à l'antiquité tardive. Tous deux partent de documents récemment découverts et tous deux établissent une conjonction avec des textes littéraires bien déterminés. Le premier commente une épitaphe trouvée en Tunisie par M. Gübert Picard et y trouve non seulement des réminiscences virgiliennes, mais surtout l'écho de l'exégèse symbolique de l'Enéide et du Chant VI, exégèse majorant mais le texte y prêtait -les allusions à l'immortalité céleste de l'âme. Et c'est aussi cette immortalité que met en valeur l'autre document, une des fresques de la nécropole de la Via Latina. Pour celle-ci nous avons la chance rare d'une concordance presque absolue avec un texte qu'on trouve chez les néoplatoniciens et qui à dû, selon toutes vraisemblances, être connu de ce cercle influencé par Porphyre, dont M. Pierre Courcelle, dans ses admirables travaux, aussi solides que nouveaux, sur le néoplatonisme de langue latine, à mis en valeur l'importance. La catacombe de la Via Latina nous fait pénétrer directement dans ce milieu où la spiritualité chrétienne ne craignait pas de se chercher des précédents chez les maîtres païens, chez Platon et chez Aristote, préludant ainsi à la scolastique médiévale. Et l'épitaphe de Julia Modesta, elle aussi, parait être un écho d'un néoplatonisme chrétien, si l'on à égard à l'observation importante que me fit Jérôme Carcopino et que j'ai consignée dans une note. Ainsi, tout au long de ce livre, c'est, on l'aura remarqué, la symbiose de la pensée et de la sensibilité romaine avec la pensée et la sensibilité grecque qui à retenu souvent mon attention. Ainsi suis-je resté fidèle aux leçons que j'avais reçues de Franz Cumont et de Jérôme Carcopino et c'est en prononçant ces deux noms, chers tous deux à l'Ecole française de Rome, dont j'ai eu l'insigne honneur d'être le directeur, que je voudrais achever cette brève introduction, en demandant pardon au souvenir de ces maîtres illustres si je n'ai pu donner par mes travaux qu'un trop médiocre écho à leurs enseignements.

In this paper, I discuss Latin cognomina ending in -ianus
derived from cognomina, a formation attested for instance in Priscianus
and Severianus, derived from Priscus and Severus. The main part of the
exposition consists of an inventory of all cognomina of this type known
to me, divided into sections according to the types of cognomina from
which the cognomina in -ianus have been derived. The paper also
includes observations on cognomina in -inus and on agnomina of slaves
and freedmen in -ianus derived from cognomina. I conclude the paper
with observations on the chronology of the cognomina in -ianus. Unlike
cognomina in -ianus derived from nomina (Aemilianus, Fulvianus, etc.),
which are known already from the Republican period, cognomina in
-ianus derived from cognomina seem to be attested only from the about
the middle of first century AD onwards.

В историографии сохраняются споры о том, насколько успешна была судебная реформа 1864 г., в особенности на окраинах Российской империи. Дискутируется, способствовала ли реформа формированию правовой культуры, решению конфликтов в государственных судах, на основе закона и в соответствии с установленной судебной процедурой. Обсуждается, привела ли реформа к отчуждению этносословных элит и более широких масс населения от имперского правосудия или, напротив, способствовала активному освоению новых институтов. Автор статьи исходит из гипотезы, что в пореформенный период шли процессы взаимной адаптации различных имперских сообществ (сословных, этнических, конфессиональных, локальных и пр.) и пореформенной судебной системы. На окраинах важную роль в этих процессах играл институт почетных мировых судей. В статье на данных широкого спектра источников (ведомственные списки и статистика, служебные формуляры, ревизии, периодика, мемуары) институт почетных мировых судей исследуется как значимый канал участия элитных представителей региональных и местных сообществ в пореформенной юстиции. Преимущественное внимание уделяется западным и южным регионам империи — Остзейскому краю и Западному краю, Бессарабии, Крыму и Закавказью. До настоящего времени в историографии преимущественное внимание уделялось институту почетных мировых судей во внутренних губерниях и в отношении них преобладал скептический взгляд. Расширение географии и источников исследования позволило сделать вывод о том, что почетные мировые судьи на окраинах были востребованы и отличались, в целом, достаточно высоким уровнем активности. Они способствовали региональной и локальной контекстуализации новых судов, привносили в коронное правосудие хорошее знание местных реалий, обеспечивали учет региональных и локальных правовых норм. В целом, это был значимый и достаточно успешный опыт реализации государственно-общественной модели правосудия. Библиогр. 15 названий.

Presentamos aquí una interesante inscripción que se descubrió en 1976 en el transcurso de las obras de rehabilitación del Palacio de Francisco de Godoy, sede de la antigua Consejería de Educación y Cultura de la Junta de Extremadura. Es muy posible que apareciera en la zona del jardín, cuando se procedió a la construcción de los nuevos pabellones. El citado palacio se ubica en la plaza de Santiago, en la ciudad monumental de Cáceres, y allí se conservó nuestra pieza todos estos años hasta que recientemente ha sido trasladada a las dependencias del Museo de Cáceres

Presented historical study has been based mainly on epigraphic sources from Roman Britain from the period 202-212 AD. It focuses on the damnatio memoriae of the younger son of the emperor Septimius Severus, Geta, whose name was erased from monuments erected in Roman forts in Britain. The author attempts to reconstruct the image of inscriptions and the manner in which the destruction was carried out and also peruses for reestablishing the memory of damned Caesar.
