I have just noticed the same problem on a couples of websites. If I disable the plugin, then the flags will appear as expected in the menu.

I tried the newest version and it is working without any problems. I just uninstalled the old version and installed the new version.

I have tried with 4 different emails. And it is the same problem.
The problem is the SSL certificate and NOT Email Subscribers & Newsletter.
So it is me, who is sorry for the inconvenience you had.
