I am looking to build something where people can come a register for open leagues/camps/teams and so on. I plan for them to pay for the registration and then I want to be able to sort them by what they registered for.

Am I correct that this is mainly for restricting content.

  • Hi there,

Thanks for looking into Paid Memberships Pro. We have plenty of users who are implementing what you describe, some of whom also use BuddyPress with our BuddyPress Add On to further enhance their experience. We can handle paying at registration and restricting content based on levels, or remain open to all once the registration is handled.

So if each camp can set it’s own price. I would have to create membership signups for each individual camp/league/team. Also since these groups are seasonal, How would it work if they need to sign up for the new season but are still a ‘member’ of the old registered camp. Can memberships be set to expire at the end of the season?

When I looked at your buddy press :
Our BuddyPress Integration for Paid Memberships Pro allows you to restrict access to specific features of your BuddyPress community by membership level, allowing you to build a custom, private, and flexible members-only community.

It still comes across as a social platform with membership restrictions. Which still doesn’t sound what I am asking for. As the focus is on a community and restricted access to areas of that community. Not collecting info from a visitor, allowing them to register for a class/camp/team and allowing me/admin to filter users by that collected info.

    I just need the following:
    1. The ability for people to come to the site and register for a
league, camp, etc. – straightforward registration and Paypal payment.

    2. The ability to group registered users into categories by team,
region, etc., and then send custom emails to a group or groups, as needed.

To accomplish 1 I don’t need to worry about protecting site content – just getting them signed up, registered and to collecting specific information from them. I didn’t see any mention of being able to control the forms they use to register/become a member.

To accomplish 2 I need to collect specific information in step one when they register.

    I just need the following:
    1. The ability for people to come to the site and register for a
league, camp, etc. – straightforward registration and Paypal payment.

Paid Memberships Pro can handle this, you can create a membership level per league / camp etc or filter according to user meta with a custom field on checkout. For example, your membership level is $49 a year but a user can choose what group to join. This can be decided by using a custom select field on registration.

    2. The ability to group registered users into categories by team,
region, etc., and then send custom emails to a group or groups, as needed.

Usually creating a separate membership level per category is the easiest, or as per the previous point using a custom field that is linked to the user. You then can use a service like MailChimp and segment user’s based on membership level to send relevant content / emails to the correct audience.

To accomplish 2 I need to collect specific information in step one when they register.

To create custom fields on checkout and show them inside the user’s profile (if needed), you may use the Register Helper Add On to achieve this. For more information on this, you may view the Add On and it’s documentation here – https://www.paidmembershipspro.com/add-ons/pmpro-register-helper-add-checkout-and-profile-fields/

    I hope this helps.

    1) I think the best option would be to make a level for each league/camp. Each individual group can and may be priced differently. So having a single price and then having them choose a group wont work.

NOTE: The setup wont be yearly. It will be seasonal. So peoples payments will cover them for the season and then we need the membership to expire after the season is over – that way a new one can be made for the new season and people can apply again. I did note that there is an add on for specific expiration dates and registration limits (date & Number of applicants.) Which would be needed.

Also I think I want to separate registration to the site from buying the memberships. It would be good for visitors to register for the site and always have a profile available to them. This would be free. Then as the seasons come and go they can apply to leagues/camps and that info gets added to their profile. As I note later they need the ability to register for multiple groups.

    2) For the grouping and email- I think we need something more specific then just sorting by membership level. The main thing is the ability for the admin to be able to tag users in different categories so he can email them. The same user might be in more than one category, so it can’t just be that they’re sorted based on the registration form they used or the membership level/group the signed up for. It could be by region or something entirely different that the admin wants to group by. Do you think I would be able to combine get this plugin to interact with something like this: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-user-groups/..

Note: Also, can someone sign up for more then one membership. The scenario I have in mind is that someone may have two children that they want to sign up for two different things.

    3) The registration helper seems perfect for collecting information when they register for a membership! thanks

Thank you for being so through in answering my questions. I just want to make sure of all the functionality before having them purchase the premium version.

I was looking at the following plugins to add with being able to add multiple categories/groups to a user profile.

    Says it integrates with PMP:

    something else I found.

I want to stress that it is Also important that users be able to register for more then one membership.

They may want to register one kid for camp and another kid for Camp B. Is this possible?

As for the emailing, I am not going to worry about it. Either way I have to pick another plugin to handle the emails. I’ll probably need to make sure that THAT plugin integrates with a user group plugin. Seems like the easiest way to achieve this.

    Thank you.

We currently are building the Multiple Memberships Per User Plugin. This is still in beta and can be found on GitHub and is in beta.

Here is a guide as a workaround, if you do not want to test the beta plugin – https://www.paidmembershipspro.com/multiple-membership-levels-per-user-pmpro-workarounds/
