Multi-site? I run a bunch of Multi-sites.
WordPress dot com is one of the biggest WordPress Multi-sites out there. There are others. Plenty of others.
Ads? Who cares about ads? I advertise my own business interests on my own sites.
@sterndata I have seen those. You know that’s not what I was asking about.
@jnashhawkins a bunch of multisites? Is it public? How many people do you have blogging under ur domain name? How did you plan to pay them?
I understand that you can advertise your own stuff on it, but can you manually manage it if you have at least 500 people seriously active with it? That’s where the question comes in. I wanted to know if there was an ad integration where people blogging can see how much they have earned or how they can activate their account to start earning.
I think the goal behind multi-site itself was to create a multi-site capable WordPress platform or network where the site owners could then extend the platform into whatever they might want.
You might take a look at WPMU for their add-ons, plugins, and extensions to extend the multi-site and if you wish to run ADs from your own network you might look at running something like the Revive Adserver.
The automation and recordkeeping functions you are wanting could be built over time and I’m sure there is someone out there who has done some of that work already.

I never knew that was the goal behind it. It’s just like using a chainsaw to cut something a machete could cut. People could always use subdomains. But it’s alright though. Guess I’ll stop complaining. What one should be asking about is for a way to tweak WPMS to deliver the kind of thing I’m looking for.
