UTM parameters don’t appear in DebugView

I have the same issue as https://wordpress.org/support/topic/monsterinsights-stopped-tracking-utm-variables/ and it’s frustrating that I can’t see the resolution because the topic was continued in private.
I noticed UTM parameters were missing from GA4 > Reports > Traffic acquisition after doing some manual tests on a few sites and waiting two days.
I then replicated this on an up-to-date dummy site with no caching:
- Installed and connected Google Site Kit plugin and, using GA4’s DebugView tool, confirmed that loading https://wordpress.pillerdesigns.com/?utm_source=test_source7 in an Incognito window generates a page_view event within 60 seconds, with the source parameter set to “test_source7”.
- Closed all Incognito windows, deactivated Google Site Kit, and installed and connected MonsterInsights, without changing any settings.
- Loaded https://wordpress.pillerdesigns.com/?utm_source=test_source8 in a new Incognito window several times, waited several minutes, and no page_view event ever appeared.
- Closed all Incognito windows, deactivated MonsterInsights, reactivated Google Site Kit, and confirmed that loading https://wordpress.pillerdesigns.com/?utm_source=test_source9 in an Incognito window generates a page_view event with the source parameter set to “test_source9”.

Would it be possible to re-activate MonsterInsights at https://wordpress.pillerdesigns.com/ ? I’d love to take a look at how our tracking script is being inserted. This will be a big help in better understanding why UTM tracking isn’t working as expected.

I’d prefer to keep this public so it benefits others as well.
In your screenshot, I don’t see “Source” in the “Name” column (if it were there, it should have a Value of “mi_test”). The only place I see it is in the Page Location—that’s not a UTM parameter.
Also, for this to be a realistic test, please remove parameters like “gtm_debug” that would not be included when a customer clicks an ad. I provided step-by-step instructions; instead of moving us in new directions perhaps you could repeat the test I did using GA4’s DebugView tool?

Sorry for any confusion. The Tag Assistant mainly checks that tracking tags are firing correctly on a website. It doesn’t automatically process URL parameters, but it’s helpful for verifying any captured parameters are being passed through as expected.
Since DebugView only works within the property itself, I used a test Google Analytics property and a test website to demonstrate how it looks from my end:
- Tag Assistant shows the UTM parameters are passed along: https://a.supportally.com/i/dhqdJA
- Focusing on source, the Realtime report of the Google Analytics property shows the value comes through: https://a.supportally.com/i/xfONJO
- DebugView shows the same thing: https://a.supportally.com/i/Nsr92r
- After enough time has passed, I’m able to see the value in standard reporting: https://a.supportally.com/i/noEMFi

Thanks for confirming that you’re seeing utm_source in DebugView. I dug deeper and discovered this is a conflict between your plugin and FlyingPress, even when I’ve disabled all relevant FlyingPress optimizations (screenshot) and purged the entire cache. Somehow Site Kit by Google is able to work with FlyingPress but MonsterInsights does not. Let me know if you’re able to figure out what’s different.
Before you respond with a link to FlyingPress’ documentation on Ignored Query Parameters, remember that these ignored GA4 parameters do work with Google’s Site Kit plugin. I’m also aware that adding utm_source to FlyingPress’ Separate Cache for Query Parameters setting might fix the problem, but this isn’t ideal for performance reasons. As mentioned in FlyingPress’ documentation on Customize Ignored Query Parameters, “Ignoring them prevents duplicate cache entries and improves cache efficiency.”

Since MonsterInsights takes a more advanced approach to analytics beyond basic tracking needs, it may behave differently in comparison. But I appreciate the information shared and understand your preference.
At this time we don’t have plans to make changes since FlyingPress provides a setting intended to address this scenario, however, our upcoming release will include a new filter that may help improve flexibility in setups like this. It isn’t meant to replace the FlyingPress setting but I’ll post an update here once it’s out.

Just sharing that we have a new filter you can try using to help with the issue. It’s available in the latest version of MonsterInsights:

Well done, I am now able to see UTM parameters in DebugView with FlyingPress!
By the way, I further narrowed the conflict to FlyingPress’ Cloudflare Page Caching feature. With that feature disabled, I’m able to see UTM parameters with or without your filter. But I definitely want to use Page Caching to reduce server load and TTFB.
