• Trying to install the plugin on a password-protected staging site.

    Upon activation, first it tries to download a local image via an HTTP request, resulting in 401 unauthorized:

    Warning: file_get_contents(.../wp-content/plugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.png): Failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized in .../wp-includes/class-wp-image-editor-imagick.php on line 156

    Then it tries to download an image from your server, except that image doesn’t exist on your server at all, giving a 404:

    Warning: file_get_contents(https://plugin.smashballoon.com/editor-test.png): Failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found in .../wp-includes/class-wp-image-editor-imagick.php on line 156

    then the plugin doesn’t have proper error protection built in, so causes a fatal error:

    Fatal error: Uncaught TypeError: preg_match(): Argument #2 ($subject) must be of type string, WP_Error given in .../wp-includes/functions.php:3065 Stack trace: #0 .../wp-includes/functions.php(3065): preg_match('!\\.(jpg|jpeg|jp...', Object(WP_Error), NULL) #1 .../wp-includes/media.php(4252): wp_check_filetype(Object(WP_Error)) #2 .../wp-content/plugins/instagram-feed/inc/class-sb-instagram-gdpr-integrations.php(159): wp_get_image_editor(Object(WP_Error)) #3 .../wp-content/plugins/instagram-feed/instagram-feed.php(704): SB_Instagram_GDPR_Integrations::gdpr_tests_successful(true) #4 .../wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(341): sbi_check_for_db_updates('') #5 .../wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(365): WP_Hook->apply_filters(NULL, Array) #6 .../wp-includes/plugin.php(522): WP_Hook->do_action(Array) #7 .../wp-settings.php(793): do_action('wp_loaded') #8 .../wp-config.php(121): require_once('...') #9 .../wp-load.php(50): require_once('...') #10 .../wp-admin/admin.php(35): require_once('...') #11 .../wp-admin/plugins.php(10): require_once('...') #12 {main} thrown in .../wp-includes/functions.php on line 3065

    Then every load after that gives errors about database tables not existing, presumably because the installation process failed to proceed past that point.

    Seems a very buggy plugin and a weird way of doing things – what now?

    Hi @smerriman ,

    Thank you for the detailed write up of the errors you ran into, and we’re sorry for the trouble you had getting the plugin installed on your staging site.

    I’ve shared everything you reported with our development team so they can look into these issues further, and make any needed adjustments in a future update to the plugin.

    In the meantime, we would suggest these steps to get a clean installation in place:

    1. Fully deactivate and then delete the plugin from your site.
    2. Temporarily disable the password protection on the staging site.
    3. Install the plugin again fresh and activate it.
    4. Once it is activated and running, turn the password protection back on.

    I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!
    Louis
