The Free version of the plugin does not search custom fields, the Pro one does. Are you referring to their Pro version or the Free one?

I tried both, Free & Pro, neither recognize PODS
I’ll look into some other options and get back to you.
Relevanssi is a good option which changes the default WordPress search field to search multiple fields with quick indexing. The free version includes most fields; paid version is for things like indexing content of PDFs and other attachments.
Facet WP is a very robust, paid, option for faceted search (checkboxes and dropdowns combined).
The two plugins work with Pods and in combination with each other.
Most other options I’ve seen for faceted-search tend to require configuring and offloading to third-party services for search indexing.
For Search and Filter Pro, I don’t have access to the plugin, but their documentation seems to indicate that a search field needs to be configured with a Query, Data Type, and Data Source:
