• I understand that event plugins exist, but I don’t like them. They are all too complex and I don’t need 99% of what they do and I’m trying to limit plugins.
I’d rather use a native WP feature and display posts as upcoming events and have a date that is dynamic, like hiding events when they pass. Even if it’s a tick box that says, this is a future event, allowing the event to be posted with the date showing.
Just adding a new field to show manually typed dates wouldn’t be dynamic. I’d have to remember to hide stuff when they are done.
I appreciate the whole ‘scheduled’ thing, allowing people to work on stuff in advance, but I think it would be great to have a feature that also displays those posts, without hiding them until that date.

Sounds like a plausible idea, but it also has some disadvantages for many users. An event often has not only a date but also a start and end time. And sometimes it recurs at different intervals. So a checkbox like this would only help a small number of users.

If you want something like this, I would recommend implementing it as a plugin first. Then you can see if a) it works and b) enough users are interested in it. I would also strongly recommend that you take the above-mentioned setting options into consider. And then you have the next event plugin 🙂 But it can serve as a basis for testing feasibility and interest. If you need help with development, you’ll definitely find it here: https://jobs.wordpress.net

You can also submit a request in Core Trac. Developers check and evaluate the entries there: https://core.trac.wordpress.org – however, based on the above, I’m not sure if it will end positively.

There are quite a few plugins that do this already. Do a search for “WordPress Post Expire” and you should find quite a few.
