Numbering of upload downloaded files
-
I think that lately the number of the “uploads” files has been confused.
uploads (2) only seems to be downloaded into the uploads-2 directory if it’s the second I press. If I press anything else as the second it seems to come as uploads-2.
Am I right or just having a bad day? I think it’s been like this for some time.
I am using Updraft 1.25.7

Hi there,
Can you please describe the steps you are taking to create this scenario?
This way we can look to replicate the scenario and test for any problems.
Best regards,
NickSimpler than I thought. I have 8 uplouds files:
“uploads” to “uploads(8)”
If I as the first press “uploads(8)” to be downloaded it’s downloaded as “….uploads8.zip” but automatically unpacked by macOS 15.6.1 Sequoia into a directory simply called “uploads”.
The next I press will make new directories according to sequence only.
Seems like this may make recovering worse?
I use Safari 18.6
I tested Chrome 139.0.7258.139
Same thing happens with the packed out directory, but the zip file is kept as “..uploads8.zip”

Maybe you make the zip file before you know the numbering.. (catch 22?)
Hi,
The numbering isn’t controlled by UpdraftPlus — the plugin creates the archives as uploads.zip, uploads2.zip, uploads3.zip, etc. What you’re seeing is macOS and the browser deciding how to name or unzip them. Safari in particular often auto-extracts and renames folders, which can make it look inconsistent.
For restores, you don’t need to unzip the files yourself. Just keep them zipped and place them back into wp-content/updraft; UpdraftPlus will detect and reassemble them correctly.
Regards,
BryleThanks! But maybe UpdraftPlus should take care of the numbering? When the unzip is done on same named directories, the same name will come out and the browser (Safari or Chrome) will have to invent a unique name, which it does by adding that number, not to overwrite.
I mean, since UpdraftPlus already shows a number to the user, I would have kept this consistent all the way throught to the stored zip or unpacked-to directory.
By the way, would you know how to tell Safari not to unpack?
Hi there,
This isn’t really within the scope of our plugin as normal usage doesn’t require this,
Our plugin operates with the numbered zip files created during the backup process.
So actually downloading these zips and extracting them isn’t part of our processes.
I can see your point, but it doesn’t relate to the regular usage of our plugin as such.
I suspect the reason for the unpacked file being named uploads is a very simple one.
When the files are merged during a restore they all have to go to the uploads folder.
Regarding the Safari unpack, my colleague has kindly provided me with this guide:
1- In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Safari.
2- Select Settings from the dropdown menu (on older macOS versions, it may be called Preferences).
3- In the settings window, navigate to the General tab.
4- Scroll down to find the option “Open “safe” files after downloading”.
5- Deselect: the checkbox next to this option.Best regards,
NickThanks times two!
So any restore WordPress is done on the stored backups in the UpdraftPlus menu? So downloading them to my machine would help zero if I needed to rebeuild kind of, if my server had lost everything on it?
Thank you very much, I’m happy to help!
Yes, the restore process is done through the plugin interface and is mostly automatic.
You could always use the downloaded files to recover, and it’s easier with the plugin.
Even without the plugin you could use downloaded files to recover your site if needed.
It would just be a bit more work and complication as you’d need to place files manually.
Ultimately, the backup files contain everything you would need to recover a website.
The difference is with the plugin is it’s a much easier and far quicker recovery process.
Best regards,
NickGood clarification! Thank you! Øyvind
