I searched through the KB but didn’t see this answered. I also looked at open issues on GH but didn’t see it there either. I’d intended to open an issue on GitHub but don’t have time to read the contribution guidelines.

I installed Yoast SEO and Pods SEO on a new site I’m developing and ran the link checker but it did not work as expected. The Yoast SEO link checker never stopped counting, indicative of an infinite recursion logic error.

Here’s a screenshot of the output: Text 2562600 of 239 processed.

The site under development is running PHP7.x and WP 4.8.x. It has approximate 300 pages I’ve migrated from a Jekyll site. New Relic shows no errors on the server.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Should I disable the link checker before continuing to use the plugin?

  • That sounds like a plugin or theme conflict. Can you try and gather as much information for us as possible? Please perform the following:

    1. Make sure the issue doesn’t persist when Yoast SEO is disabled.
    2. Check for conflicts.
    3. Check for JavaScript errors with your console.

If you find any JavaScript errors related to Yoast SEO or if there is a conflict with a plugin or a theme, you can create a new GitHub issue for our developers. Please report the issue to a third party developer as well.

If you didn’t find any conflicts or errors, we think the issue is specific to your site. We’d need to investigate further but are unable to do so on these forums. You can purchase Yoast SEO Premium and receive our Premium email support and we can help you further.

If you wish you can also disable the Link Counter feature following the instructions here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/disable-internal-linking/

Thanks for the response. Oddly enough, I opened dev tools to look for errors, clicked the count link again, and the counter started working as expected. No JS errors occur on my site. A fluke? Not sure. But it happened each time under the same conditions and until the time when I opened dev tools so I felt it was worth pointing out this plugin issue.

Perhaps someone else will chime in if they’re experiencing the same issue. But for now at least it has alleviated itself. Thanks for the free plug-in, I’ll be sticking with the free version.

Environment: WP 4.8.1, Pantheon hosting, Septera theme, plugins minimal

@jhabdas It sounds like an issue specific to the cache. In some cases, opening the browser developer tools disables the site cache for the browser.

However, we’re glad to hear that you were able to finally run the count links analysis on your site.

Definitely still an issue. Happened with the very next website I installed Yoast on, and I put Yoast on first. What I learned earlier in this thread, however, is the workaround—which is to run the link counter with devtools open. Thanks again for the help!
