Lightweight image compression solution
-
This is an essential plugin when you have editors on the website who don’t know, don’t care or don’t have the time to optimize the images before upload. The fact that it doesn’t have a way to control the compression quality in its option page doesn’t bother me much, but it would be an improvement for those who don’t want to touch PHP code.
It’s designed to be as lightweight as possible without extra dependencies. Compared to EWWW Image Optimizer or WebP Express, it’s much simpler and I prefer it that way. But if I compare the conversion to WebP, EWWW and WebP express should be better on paper because they come with cwebp, which is the best software for WebP encoding. Modern Image Formats depends on imagick or gd PHP extensions, which is also the default behaviour of WordPress. To have the ability to choose between compatible libraries like cwebp, libvips and gmagick would be a great improvement, because different libraries can offer greater speed or better quality.
