I have a site that is about to be completely redesigned with a new menu structure and category structure, the site is a Joomla site. We plan to migrate it to WordPress for this new build and I had a few questions about the process.

I know there are migration plugins, but if I just were to migrate the articles and the meta data associated with them over to wordpress and then start the rebuild, would it be better to do this so as to not have it pollute the new WP environment with menus and categories that will only be deleted? The articles from Joomla would be migrated to be part of a custom post type that I would call “articles” in WP too, not sure if adding the CPT into the equation complicates this or would require a different approach.

I realize I may be overthinking this, it would be my first migration from Joomla to WordPress and it’s a pretty large site.

    Thanks.

  • @visualeight – I’m going to suggest this might be a bit complicated although this is how I would likely approach it myself:

    1. Migrate the Joomla content to WordPress with https://wordpress.org/plugins/fg-joomla-to-wordpress/
    2. Create your CPT
    3. Migrate the imported Posts to the new CPT with https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/post-type-switcher/

I would also suggest the re-design be done on the WordPress installation as the theme/template structures do not readily transfer and would likely be less work to complete after the content is migrated (and more easily envisioned on the site).

PS: The above plugins are just suggestions, you might find others you prefer with your own searches.

Thanks Edward, that was my thought on this, just didn’t know if doing a direct export of the Joomla article table into at CPT table made more sense.

Jan, I would argue differently, since my question was about developing custom post types in WordPress as well as database design and management.
