How to format posts page

    I format the Latest posts page as I desire: 3 columns, small thumbnails next to the post title, total 32 posts. But When I save it, I see a lot more detail per post and a menu in the sidebar which I haven’t generated.
    How can I edit the menu?
    How can I get the posts to be displayed as I wish?
